| Definitions Rape Defined as penetration by force or threat of force. Penetration includes any orifice or opening. Sex without consent is considered rape. Force is the difference between rape and romance. Stranger Rape Sexual assault where the assailant does not know the victim. It is often planned in advance and victims are chosen who may be vulnerable. Acquaintance Rape Sexual assault where the victim knows the attacker. Under the law, acquaintance rape is no different than stranger rape and is not considered a lesser offense. Acquaintance rape defines the relationship between the victim and the offender; it is not a special legal category of rape. According to researcher Mary P. Koss, 84% of rapes of college men who committed acquaintance rape said what they did was not rape. Date Rape A sub category of acquaintance rape. It occurs during dates and can occur at any point in a dating relationship. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
